The former Walla Walla Undersheriff accused of embezzling funds from the Sheriff's Office changed her plea to guilty in Spokane on Thursday.

Carole Lepiane originally pleaded not guilty to charges of embezzlement but changed that plea in federal court in Spokane.

According to federal court documents, Lepiane stole bail money from inmates on more than 50 occasions from 2004 to 2009 while employed with the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office.

Lepiane would pocket cash sent from inmates at the jail for bail and cover up that stolen money with checks that came from a phone company that provides calls for inmates.

The former Undersheriff stopped working for the Sheriff's Office in 2009.

Her lawyer released the following statement regarding the embezzlement:

"Carole Lepiane is very sorry for the trouble she has caused her family, her former employer and Walla Walla County. She hopes to make amends."

The documents said Lepiane was depositing the money into her own personal bank account and using the money for her own online shopping purchases.
